steps - what's next

This is the end of year one for my little experiment.

My plan is to continue into the new year, but I want to incorporate more writing, and different kinds of media. I ended up focusing on primarily on photography (which is what I prefer to do), however I feel that I wish to develop, and explore, drawing and painting more. The constraint of "one day" art work necessitates that the works be smaller, experimental and more immediate, but I think they will be valuable nonetheless.

I would like my work to continue to grow, and be valuable to people. I am pulled back to wanting to do something for the people of St. Helena on a daily basis. Our visit there in 2008 is still resonating with all the members of our family, and I would like to find some way to repay the kindness we felt there, and to tell the story of the wonderful people we met. However, I don't have the money to get there and do all the things we dream of doing to help.

I have created a movie slide show of all the images created over the past year to review what I have done so far. If you missed any, now is a chance to see them all in less than two minutes, just click HERE.

I am also featured on makesomething365 today. This is the companion site for the new book 365: A Daily Creativity Journal from Noah Scalin creator of Skull-A-Day. It's a place to be get inspired and to inspire others to create a daily project!

Thanks Noah!

smith corona - revisited

My daughter's typewriter (and yes she does use it). The contrast of the keys, and the books creates a dynamic patter for me. I also like the sense of disorientation caused by the low angle. It leads me to think, what is just below the viewers line of sight.

363

wall and light

I have found I am drawn to the same places to photograph, and try to find new ways to see. I like the idea of seeing something that is familiar in a new light.

can

Another study in design, texture and pattern.

361

little still life, with candle and pine cone

The view at out back window. I think it is a nice study in color, and texture.

360

blue bottle

Today I learned how to cut glass bottles to make cups, and vase's. This was my first attempt to remove the top, and bottom of a wine bottle. It is a little jagged, but works. Plus I like the shape, lines and contrast.

Christmas day, family and fun.

358

More shadow play...

357

shadow

I like the subtle interplay of light and shadow cast by our hall coat hooks.

356

dark

Our kitchen, reflections, and lights outside.

355

candles and tree

Playing with light ad reflection on a silvered tree.

354

disco ball

One of the odder ornaments on the tree. In the afternoon it turns the living-room into an explosion of little lights.

353

shimmering shadows

The old glass in our windows, combinded with the frame, and Christmas cross make interesting shadows in the afternoon sun.

352

christmas lights

My father-in-law puts out lanterns as Christmas lights. They provide a nice warm glow, and a counter point to the bright lights of other houses in the neighborhood.

350

pink, orange and purple

We have a streetlight in front of our house, and it casts an unearthly red glow sometimes. The snow in the street looked like cotton candy when I went outside this evening.

light

I shot a whole bunch of different subjects today. Christmas ornaments, lights, outdoors, but ended up using the last shot I took. It just popped out and caught my attention.

348

light

I like christmas lights. I prefer the old screw in, pastel type to these, but we don't have any of the old type.
The tilt and shift lens I made also works well for close up shots.

spangles

For some reason the decorations my daughter Ema has put up in her room remind me of a Cocteau Twins song. I am not sure if the thought of the song came first or the image, it was like a flash of both when I poked my head into her room this evening. In fact the last three images I have made look like they could be covers for their albums, odd, especially since I haven't listened to them in years.
